It’s a trick question

A customer who had just gotten a new 855 number asked me, “Is there an option to text from the 855 number?”

That reminds me of one of my favorite lines in My Cousin Vinny. It’s a trick question, because there was no 327 in 1955: Chevrolet did not manufacture a 327 cubic-inch engine in 1955. It wasn’t introduced until 1962.

How it really works

You can receive texts on toll free numbers. You can’t actually make phone calls from a toll free number, because it’s like a remote call forwarding number. But you do see calls that look like they’re coming from a toll free number. That’s because the number was programmed into the calling system, not because the call was actually connected to the number.

Texting is a little different. A texting service can turn on texting for your toll free number, and once the phone companies verify your business, you can send texts that show that number and they can get the replies. But texting from the cell phone that your toll free number forwards to does NOT show the toll free number.

So the answer is yes and no

So maybe the answer is yes and no. It doesn’t work the way you’re thinking, but you can accomplish what you want to do.
